I agree that tabs can help you if you have no idea where, on which string to play the notes. But the tab creation feature of Melody/Harmony does a very good job. In cases I used guitar tabs every now and then I had to change one or two things. So inputing notes and letting the programm do the tab computing may not always show the result you are actually looking for. You know that the same not may be played on different strings and how shall the programm always know exactly what you want to do. Tabs for guitar are always a tricky thing. I did look at the tablature tutorial but I don't remember it discussing this issue. « Last Edit: May 3 rd, 2008, 1:16am by Huntn » I'm such a novice, I don't claim to know what I'm talking about, but I'd be interested in other opinions. Tabs give you more of a visual representation of what your doing with your hands and it seems like they would make it easier to go from reading, to memorizing, to winging it with no sheet music in front of you. I'm not 100% convinced but here's an impression, please let me know if you agree or disagree- when you're reading music, you can play it when your reading, but it's tough making the leap to playing by memory. I can see why they are popular.īut at the beginning I decided I was going to learn music notation no matter what. When I first started, tabs where a very attractive concept because number one you don't have to learn music notes, and two, it's giving you a visual guide with what your doing with your fingers that notes don't give. I played piano when I was a kid, and learning notes is challenging, learned on piano and then forgot. This is an issue I've been considering, whether it's better to stick with notes, tabs, or both. You can change default settings for tablature by clicking on the little button 'TAB' at the left edge and changing 'Maximum gap between forefinger and little finger' value from 5 to 4, for instance. F, the tablature changes and the previous note will be marked as empty string E, exactly as you expect. In your example, if you add another note, e.g. The behaviour of the program is correct, because it tries to optimize finger moves. As far as I have seen the default settings do not give you the best result (with one finger on fret one and another on fret twelve, you must have pritty big hands ) I don't know which setup gives the best result, but if you experiment a little with this you will probably find a logical setup. Strum down melody assistant software#When you change the "empty string penalty" or the "fret changing penalty" the software will come up with a different result. I never use tabulatures, but as far as I know this is something that you can alter in the "tabulature setup" (in the staff menu). « Last Edit: May 2 nd, 2008, 8:54pm by Huntn » Is this an error with the program or is there a setting that controls how tablature is generated? It's sitting right next to the D so I don't know why the program would choose a 5 on the second string. Maybe in another octave or another fret, I'm not sure, but I know this note should be an open note 0 on the first string. The problem, for some reason tablature does not always display properly.Īssuming your familiar with music notation and guitar tablature, if I start out manually inserting notes on the second space down (C), tablature shows a 1 on the second string (thats right), then a note on the second line down (D), a 3 appears on second string (thats right).īut when I place a note on the first space down (E), tablature generates a 5 on the second line. My preference is to have notes on top, guitar tablature on the bottom. I'm playing electric guitar and I'm a novice. I'm trying to decide if Melody Assistant is the right program for me.
